Some experts recommend backstepping the first inch or so of each aluminum weld before finishing in the normal direction. Here's a tip to avoid cracking that often occurs at the start of a weld when you are tig welding aluminum: Add extra filler rod when you start a weld and then stop after only a ¼” or so and let things cool for a few seconds.
